Purification of omega-3 oils

Numerous studies have shown in recent years how important omega-3 fatty acids are for our bodies and minds. A nutrition rich in omega-3 has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. They also improve the performance of the brain. It is therefore important to consume them. "With the growing awareness of the health benefits of omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids, demand for supplements, fortified foods and enriched beverages is rising", (from the article From raw to refined: The purification of omega-3 oils published in Nutramedic&Cosmetics July 2023).

Omega-3 oils oxidise extremely quickly and can become contaminated during cultivation and transport. The purification and refinement of high quality oils and fats are a big challenge that requires a special treatment. The crude oils must be treated with a gentle refining process to remove mineral oils, reduce free fatty acids and contaminants, while at the same time keeping important micronutrients. Especially during the oil purification of vegetable oils and sensitive omega-3 oils, a gentle refining process is essential to produce high quality oils. With our mild refining technologies, we succeed in purification and oil decontamination without the formation of process contaminants.

The valuable fatty acids are derived from vegetable algae or fish oils. "Nutriswiss, a small refinery that specialises in purifying and modifying high-quality edible oils, has been processing fish oil for many years. Keeping a close eye on market developments, this Swiss company is well aware of the plant-based trend and now processes just as much algal oil as fish oil. In addition, vegetable sources such as nuts, seeds and crops (including rapeseed, chia and linseed) have become increasingly popular, as have marine microalgae", (from the article From raw to refined: The purification of omega-3 oils published in Nutramedic&Cosmetics July 2023).
